why-you-need-a-blog-for-your-small-business

One of the cardinal rules of elementary school for me was to never use a circular definition when defining vocabulary words. For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about, a circular definition is one in which you use the word you are defining in the defintion – kind of like what I just did there. Well friends, today I am going to go against everything my 5th grade English teacher taught me and use this blog to explain blogs – a circular definition if you will.

Before you click away, just hear me out. Having a blog for your business can not only increase the organic traffic to your website, but it can be a game-changer in your marketing strategy. The benefits start with having fresh content to keep your audience listening and include some serious search engine mojo, but the list doesn’t stop there. Keep reading and see what exactly a blog can do for your business.

Why Businesses Need a Blog:

1. Blogging keeps your content fresh

Let’s start with the most obvious – a blog gives you fresh content to push to your audience that keeps them engaged. It gives you a reason to post on social media besides announcing a sale that’s happening or trying to sell your product to your customers. Many people following you on social media are people who have already purchased something from you. If you want them to remain a loyal follower, constantly posting about why they should buy your product will get them clicking the ‘Unfollow’ button. However, posting a teaser to your most recent blog post will get them clicking on your profile, your website, and get them engaged further than a ‘like.’ You can learn more about the value of social media for small business here.

2. Blogging keeps you at the top of your game

In addition to providing you with compelling social media content, having a blog increases your company’s credibility in the industry. Other professionals and your customers will see that you are keeping up with the latest news in your field and being transparent with all that is going on with your business. It gives previous customers a reason to keep coming back to your website and gives potential customers a reason to respect you as an expert in your field – which increases the chances of them becoming a customer.

3. Blogging keeps you on good terms with search engines

It’s no secret that search engines have their favorites. Whether you want to admit it or not, search engine optimization (SEO) is something that every business should make a priority. Publishing blog posts means more pages for Google to index, and new opportunities for someone to land on your site. Blogs are also a great way to naturally incorporate keywords into your website, increasing the chances that Google will rank your website against related content and connect you with users who are searching for those terms. Long story short, more blogs = happy search engines = more website traffic = happy business owner.

4. Blogging keeps all your ideas in one place

Let’s pretend that you went to a conference led by one of the top industry leaders in your field. You soak it all up and even take notes on the big things you learned to take home with you and implement. Fast forward a few years and you remember when you attended that conference, had all these big plans to improve your business, but after all the excitement died down you decided it just wasn’t the right time for a rebrand or new marketing strategy. Now here you are, 3 years later finally prepared to take down that giant, but you have no recollection of anything you learned at that conference and no clue where that notebook of yours went. Well my friend, blogging just might be the answer to your problem! Your blog creates an online archive of your business achievements and reflections throughout the years that you can refer back to time and time again. You see, the benefits of blogging aren’t just for your customers.

Let’s review: blogging gives you fresh content to post on your website and on social media, it increases your credibility in your industry, it keeps search engines happy and directing more people to your website, and it gives you a space to store all of your wonderful business ideas. There are countless reasons why your business should have a blog, and if these didn’t convince you then we should chat about how it can benefit your business specifically.
